Ezekiel is one of the four ‘major prophets’ in the Old Testament. He prophesied during the time of Jeremiah and Daniel (2 other ‘major prophets’). All three of these prophets ministered during the time period known as the Babylonian Captivity. The Babylonian Captivity symbolizes the upcoming Great Tribulation. While Jeremiah prophesied in the city of Jerusalem and Daniel prophesied in the city of Babylon, Ezekiel was the prophet in the land of the Chaldeans (Babylon) by the river Chebar (Eze 1:1-3). Ezekiel was a priest who prophesied while he was in captivity of the Babylonians. In many instances, Ezekiel serves as a type of Jesus Christ.
The Babylonian Captivity (including the captivity, siege and destruction of Jerusalem) is a type of the Great Tribulation that comes upon the end-time church due to its sin including idolatry and false teaching. Therefore, the prophecy of Ezekiel is completely relevant to Christians today. Captivity symbolically involves God’s people who were driven out of the church by Babylon. Babylon represents the end-time idolatrous churches. This end-time church does not want to hear the truth of the Word of God and therefore, drive out Christians who love Jesus Christ (the Word of God). Also, the Book of Ezekiel provides significant detail concerning Cherubim. Cherubim are created beings of a higher order than the angels (Rev 4). The Cherubim display all the beautiful aspects of God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) including God’s omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence and God’s work of judgment and salvation.
