Supernatural Healing

Supernatural healing is very prevalent in Pentecostal churches and the Charismatic movement. Usually, they are falsely considered to be evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4).  This indicates is a misunderstanding of what the Baptism in the Holy Spirit really means. Yet, healings in Pentecostal and Charismatic circles are prevalent.  However, these healing are dubious.  Rather, healings were a gift that ceased after the apostolic church, which was used to write the New Testament. Supernatural healing today is a false sign.   Healings in the Bible also serve as important portraits of spiritual truth.  The condition of the one in need of healing symbolizes the condition of humans prior to salvation. And, the results of the healing (e.g., blind can see, the lame can walk, etc.) are spiritual symbols of the results of salvation.  Also, healings amongst Pentecostals are often done by laying on of hands.  Laying on of hands symbolizes the will of God in salvation. Therefore, there is no mystical power in the hands of Pentecostals and Charismatics.

Healing of the Man with a Withered Hand in the Synagogue

In Mat 12:9-14, Mk 3:1-6, Lk 6:6-11, a man with a withered right hand is in the synagogue. The scribes and Pharisees questioned Jesus as to whether it is lawful to heal (which is a work work) on the Sabbath. The key spiritual truths concerning the Sabbath Day include:

  • It is lawful to do good on the Sabbath Day – Mat 12:12, Mk 3:4, Lk 6:9 – see also Lk 14:3
  • Healing of the withered hand is equated to saving a sheep that is fallen into a pit (salvation) – Mat 12:11-12
  • And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.  (Mar 3:4)

    • The healing of the withered right hand points to salvation by restoring a person’s withered free will – The elect’s will is changed and caused to believe in Jesus Christ by grace – Eph 2:8-10, John 1:12-13, Phil 1:29, 1 Cor 7:25, etc.
  • God takes us by the hand in salvation
    • For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, says the LORD, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. (Isa 41:13-14)
    • I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude. For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul. (Psa 109:30-31)
    • Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. (Psa 73:23-24)

The Bowed Over Woman

In Lk 13:10-17, while Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath, He heals a woman who had a spirit of infirmity (asthenia, G769) and was bowed-over for 18 years (Lk 13:11).  The key spiritual truths with regard to the Sabbath include:

  • Ruler of the synagogue was indignant due to the healing on the Sabbath Day and said that there are only 6 days of which people should work (healing was a work), not on the Sabbath Day – Lk 13:14
  • Infirmity (weakness, G769 through G772) can point to spiritual infirmity
  • Healing was a portrait of salvation since she was ‘loosed’ from her infirmity of which Satan had her bound – Lk 13:12,16
    • Loosed (Gr: apoluo, G630) – to set free, set loose from bondage, forgiven)
      • Cognate with G629, G3083, G3089 – redemption (loosing, freeing)

    • Loosed (G3089, luo – to be made free, loosed) – salvation
    • Watered – Word of God, spiritually restored
    • Satan had bound – bondage to sin, Satan’s kingdom

The Man with Dropsy

While Jesus was eating bread at the house of one of the chief Pharisees (with the lawyers also in attendance) on the Sabbath day, Jesus healed a man with dropsy (Lk 14:1-6). Jesus asked them whether it was lawful to heal on the Sabbath Day, but the Pharisees and lawyers did not respond (Lk 14:3-4).  The key spiritual truth with regard to the Sabbath Day include:

  • Dropsy (Gr: hudropikos, G5203 – literally, watery looking (edema))
  • Points to salvation – who would have an ox or ass and falls into a pit, would not pull it out – (Lk 14:5 – see also Lk 13:15-16). Pit is a place of damnation.
    • Pit – Gr: Pit – Gr: phrear – Lk 14:5, John 4:11-12, Rev 9:1-2
    • ‘Phrear’ is used 6 times in the New Testament (Lk 14:5, Rev 9:1-2 (twice), John 4:11-12). In Rev 9:1-2, it is called a bottomless (abussos) pit, where the locusts come out to torment those in the world during the Great Tribulation (i.e., place of damnation).
    • Bottomless – Gr: abussos (other than Revelation used only twice – Ro 10:7, Lk 8:31 – Gadarene demoniac symbolic of place of being under torment) – A place where Jesus was – Ro 10:7. This term is used 9 times in the New Testament (Lk 8:31, Ro 10:7, Rev 9:1-2, Rev 9:11, Rev 11:7, Rev 17:8, Rev 20:1-3). It literally denotes the meaning ‘bottomless’.

The Lame Man (John 5, explained further in John 7:21-23)

In John 5:1-18 (and recounted in John 7:21-23), Jesus went up to Jerusalem because of the feast of the Jews (John 5:1). At the sheep pool of Bethesda having 5 porches was a man that was lame for 38 years and not able to be healed by the angel who stirred the waters (John 5:3-7).  Jesus asked him if he wanted to be made whole (John 5:6). Jesus healed him on the Sabbath Day and told him to take up his bed and walk (John 5:8-9).  This healing was also further discussed at the later Feast of Tabernacles in John 7:21-23.  This healing is a portrait of salvation for the following reasons:

  • Whole – (Gr: hugies (G5199) – see above on healing as salvation)
  • Rise (John 5:8-9) – (Gr: egeiro (G1453) – points to rising of Christ) – Christians are raised together with Him in salvation – Col 2:12, 1 Cor 15:52, Eph 2:5, Col 3:1, etc.
  • Walk (John 5:8-9) – walk Walking in truth / walk in the Spirit ‑ Eph 5:2,7‑10, 1 John 1:6,7, 2:3‑6, 3 John 3‑4, 1 Th 4:1, Eph 5:2, Eph 5:8, Col 1:10, Gal 5:16, Ro 6:4
  • Jews said it was not lawful to carry the bed on the Sabbath – John 5:10-11
  • Jesus said – My Father works and I work – John 5:17, John 7:21 (admitted it was work – the healing was the work of God)
  • Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to kill Him because he broke the Sabbath and said God was His Father making Himself equal with God – John 5:16-18 (see also Mat 27:1, Mk 3:6, Mat 12:14, Lk 6:11, John 10:39, John 11:53, John 11:57)
  • At the Feast of Tabernacles in John 7:21-23, Jesus pointed out that circumcision (which is a work, not given of Moses, but the fathers) is still done on the Sabbath day, whether it is a Sabbath or not (John 7:22-23). Jesus compared circumcision to making a man ‘every whit whole’ (G3650, G5199) on the Sabbath Day (John 7:23):
    • If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? (Joh 7:21-23)
      • Every whit whole – literally, wholly healed (G3650, G5199)
    • Circumcision – a Type of salvation (cutting away of the flesh with blood, seed of Abraham)

      • 8th day – Gen 17:12, Gen 21:4, Lev 12:3, Lk 1:59 (John), Lk 2:21 (Jesus), Acts 7:8 (Paul)
        • David 1st child of Bathsheba died on the 7th day – 2 Sam 12:15-23
      • A sign of the seal of the true circumcision (Ro 4:9-12)
      • A covenant of works – Acts 7:8, Ro 2:25
      • A removal of the body of sin – Col 2:11-13 w/ Gal 5:24, 1 Cor 7:19
      • A type of grace, compared to the Sabbath Day – John 7:22-23, Ro 15:8
      • Those who worship God in spirit – Phil 3:3 (true circumcision)
      • A type of faith and works – Acts 15:1,5,24, Gal 2:3,7-9, 5:3-11, 6:12-15, Titus 1:10, Acts 10:45
      • Hearts circumcised ‑ Deut 10:16, Deut 30:6, Jer 4:4, Jer 9:25, Col 2:11, Ro 2:25‑29, Phil 3:3

  • And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits…(Mark 6:7)

  • And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. (Luke 10:17-20)

Apostolic Gifts included Casting out Demons

  • How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will? (Heb 2:3-4)
  • Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds. (2 Cor 12:12)
  • And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (Mark 16:17-18)

(Rom 15:18-19)

Salvation – The Symbolic Meaning of Casting out Demons

  • And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. (Mat 8:14-17)
  • He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isa 53:3-6)
  • Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. (Isa 53:10-12)
  • Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. (1 Pet 2:24-25)
  • And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) (Eph 2:1-5)
  • Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? (Eph 4:8-9)
  • Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (Eph 6:10-13)
  • Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. (1 John 4:1-6)
  • And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. (1 John 5:19)
  • Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. (Heb 2:14-15)
  • Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. (Mat 12:22-30)
  • And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils. And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. (Mark 3:22-27)
  • But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. (Luke 11:17-23)
