Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Romans 8:26

Introduction and Contents

Although it is a fact of Scripture that we, as Christians, do not always know what to pray for, there are many Scriptures and other examples in the Bible where we can glean some things of which we should pray. Because Christians are not yet perfected and are still being changed from glory to glory, they often fail in knowing the right things to pray for.

The purpose of this booklet is to list verses found in the New Testament that teach us what to pray for. These verses are sorted into 12 categories to help enable the reader to ponder these verses in light of other verses on the same subject. This booklet is not intended to interpret spiritual meaning behind the various portraits that God paints for us in His word. Rather, by humble prayer and meditation, it is intended that the reader will carefully consider the enclosed verses. These verses are divided into the following 12 categories:

  1. Prayer for Salvation
  2. Prayer to Know and Understand God’s Word
  3. Prayer to Spread the Word of God
  4. Prayer for the Ability to Minister
  5. Prayer to be Protected from Wicked Men/Persecution
  6. Prayer for God’s Will to be Done
  7. Prayer to Increase in Love
  8. Prayer for Holiness
  9. Prayer to Not Enter Temptation
  10. Prayer for Forgiveness of Sin
  11. Prayers of Thanksgiving
  12. Prayer to Praise God’s Greatness

These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:  As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.  And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.  I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;  That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us‑ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,  Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

Amen.
