When we examine the context of 2 Peter, we find help in understanding what this seemingly obscure statement by God means. We find that in 2 Pet 3:9, the context reveals to us that the 1000 years being as 1 day and 1 day being as a 1000 years refers to the time before the second coming of Christ. It is the time that God is being patient not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to salvation. In other words, it is the time that God has allotted for His salvation plan to work out its course. It is the time that God’s plan of salvation for the elect is working out. Even though mockers will be on the scene (2 Pet 3:3), God patiently waits out His day as a 1000 years. God’s timetable is in His sovereign hands.

It is also interesting to note that this time prior to the second coming of Christ is referred to as a day. We find that in the Bible, the term day often holds a special spiritual meaning. In fact, all through the Bible we find cases where time is used in a spiritual sense. We will return to this point shortly. The term day in the Bible often refers to God’s plan of salvation in the New Covenant. Therefore, it is not surprising that the usage of the term 1000 years in the New Testament points to God’s day of salvation. We find it quoted as such in 2 Pet 3:8. We find the same meaning in Rev 20. The 1000 years of Rev 20 points to the time in which God’s elective program of salvation is being worked out. It is that glorious day of the church.

1000 Points to the Fullness of God’s Salvation Program during the Church Age

We should now be able to see the spiritual meaning of 1000 years used in Revelation 20. Consistent with the rest of Revelation, it is a spiritual portrait that God uses to depict the fullness of His church age. It represents the completeness of time that God has designated for His salvation program to work out. In no way can it be understood as a literal 1000 years. This would be contrary to the rest of Revelation. It would also be contrary to how God uses and defines His own terms in the rest of His word. We saw in 2 Peter that the 1000 years spiritually represents the Day of Salvation.

1000 as Used in Psalm 90:4

We find a notable usage of 1000 in the Old Testament that helps us confirm our understanding of Revelation 20 millennium. Consider the following:

For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.  Ps 90:4

We find in this Psalm of Moses a similar usage of 1000 years. Again, we find that the term 1000 years is used symbolically. It is equated with a day. Again, when we understand the context of Psalm 90, we find that this 1000 years as yesterday precedes a time of judgment. We see that it is just prior to the time that the wicked will be swept away as in a flood. This language points to the judgment of God. Therefore, we find additional confirmation that God uses the term 1000 years as that time prior to the judgment of God. The 1000 years is not necessarily a literal period of time.

When we study the Bible, we find many other usages of time to refer to a spiritual period of time and not necessarily literal. We find on Dan 9:24-27 that 70 weeks of years are appointed to describe the course of events that would ultimately culminate with Judgment Day. These usages are spiritual and the days can not necessarily be taken completely literally.

The term day is often used in a spiritual sense. It is used as referring to the day of the Lord, the day of Christ, the last day, the last days, the day of Jezreel (Hos 1:11). Careful study of these passages reveal that these days referred to cannot be understood as a literal day.  Rather they a period of time that a certain activity transpires.

We find that term weeks also used in a spiritual sense in the Bible. In Dan 9:24-27, we find that 70 weeks were appointed to finish the transgression and make an end to sin and to make atonement for iniquity. It is evident that these weeks were not literally fulfilled. Rather, they stood for other periods of time that are related Christ’s first and Second comings.

We find the term year used in a spiritual sense in the Bible. In Is 61, we find a reference to the acceptable year of the Lord. This terminology refers to God’s plan of salvation in the New Covenant.  Finally, the term night is often used in a spiritual sense. We find that night refers to a time of spiritual darkness and not necessarily to a literal period of time.

In summary, we must be very wary of reading Rev 20 and understanding the 1000 years as being a literal time period. There is much usage of time in the Bible where it is used in a spiritual sense. Moreover, we find the usage of 1000 years in the Bible as used to represent the day of Christ or, in other words, the period that God’s salvation program is being worked out. Very important is the fact that the only other use of 1000 years in the New Testament refers to a spiritual period of time that is the Day of salvation. Therefore, we are obliged to good hermeneutics to conclude that the 1000 years of Revelation 20 refers to the day of Christ, the Church Age.

1260       Days of sending forth the Gospel (e.g., Church Age)

  • See study on 3½ – days (church age)

  • See also 1290 (Great Tribulation)

127         Sarah’s life age

  • Sarah’s age a death – Gen 23:1
  • 127 is a prime number

1290 – Witness of God’s will being done by His people who endure the Great Tribulation (see 1260, 30, 430)

  • 1290 days symbolically the Witness of God’s will being done by His people (servants) who endure the Great Tribulation (Abomination of Desolation)
    • Dan 12:11 – And from the time the daily is taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, 1290 days
  • The number can be evaluated in two important methods:
    1. First, the number is the product of 3 times 430. The number 3 represents the Witness of God’s will and the number 430 represents the time period of being God’s people, but not in the promised land (Ex 12:40-42, Gal 3:16-7). God’s People not in the Promised Land consists of the time of God’s preparation (30 years) for the trial of being in bondage to the world for 400 years. Of this 430 years, 30 years are expired not in bondage and the other 400 years represent the fullness of trial of being in bondage (Acts 7:6, Gen 15:13).  Thirty represent the preparation for God’s will being done in the earthly service of His people (see discussion on the number 30). It is important to note that the symbolic meaning of the number 3 (witness of God’s will) is evident during the Great Tribulation since 1290 is the product of 3 and 430.
    2. It is also important to note that the sum of 1260 days (days of sending forth the Gospel in the church age) and 30 (the preparation for God’s will being done in the earthly service of His people).

430 – God’s People not in the Promised Land (Time of God’s preparation (30 years) for the trial of being in bondage to the world (400 years))

  • The number 430 represents the time period of being God’s people, but not in the promised land (Ex 12:40-42, Gal 3:16-7). Of this 430 years, 30 years are expired not in bondage and the other 400 years represent the fullness of trial of being in bondage (Acts 7:6, Gen 15:13).  God’s People not in the Promised Land consists of the time of God’s preparation (30 years) for the trial of being in bondage to the world for 400 years (see study on the number 400). Thirty represent the preparation for God’s will being done in the earthly service of His people (see discussion on the number 30). It is important to note that the symbolic meaning of the number 3 (witness of God’s will) is evident during the Great Tribulation since 1290 is the product of 3 and 430.

62     Spiritual Battle by God’s Witnesses

  • The number 62 is used in the Bible as referring to the amount of people who keep the gates (a.k.a., gatekeepers, porters) and serve the tabernacle:
  • All these of the sons of Obededom: they and their sons and their brethren, able men for strength for the service, were threescore and two of Obededom. (1Ch 26:8)
  • 6200 is used in Num 3:34 as the number of the males of Merari (son of Levi (Num 3:17)). Merari’s sons were in charge of various potions of the tabernacle.
  • 62 is also the age of Darius when he conquered Babylon (Dan 5:31) – Age of Darius was 62 (2 X 31), when Babylon fell (Dan 5:31). This was the time that the angel stood to confirm Darius the Mede (Dan 11:1); also in this 1st year of Darius was the 70 weeks prophecy given (Dan 9:1)
  • 62 weeks – Dan 9:25 – time of rebuilding the street and wall in troublesome times
  • Because 62 Weeks (or 62 sevens or 434) only has minimal parallel passages in the Bible, this number could also be broken down as:
    • 62 times 7
    • 31 times 2 times 7 (all prime numbers)
  • See studies on 31 and 2

The number ‘31’ is found in the following passages:

  • Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years. (2Ch 34:1)
  • Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath. (2Ki 22:1)
  • Number of kings conquered by Joshua on the west side of the River Jordan:
    • … all the kings thirty and one. (Jos 12:24)

Josiah was notable for driving out foreign idolatry from Judah and restoring the Law of God, but was defeated and killed in battle (2 Chr 34:1-21).  Joshua also was known for battles and drove out foreign kings from the Promised Land (Josh 12).  But Joshua was not completely successful in driving out the heathen from the land (Josh 13:1-7). The number 31 can be seen as the number of ‘spiritual battle’.

66:

  • All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob’s sons’ wives, all the souls were threescore and six;  (Gen 46:26, see also Acts 7:14 and 1 Chr 7:14-20)

Use of Multiplication of Numbers

In order to understand the spiritual meaning of ’62 Weeks’, it is important to understand that numbers in prophecy (e.g., 2, 4, 7, 10, 12, 144, 1000, 144,000, etc.) are used symbolically. In addition the Bible reveals that symbolic numbers often are made up of multiples of other numbers. For example, the 144,000 discussed in the Book of Revelation refers to the 12 tribes of spiritual Israel multiplied by 12,000 from each tribe. To understand the symbolic meaning of this number, one must understand that the number refers to 12 (Old Testament church) times 12 (New Testament church) times 1000 (symbolic of complete fullness). This symbolic number refers to the complete fullness of the organization of God’s true church.

Another example of multiples of numbers having symbolic meaning is the following passage:

  • Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. (Mat 18:21-22)

In this passage, one must recognize that the number 7 symbolically means the ‘perfection of purpose’.  The number 70 represents the multiples of 7 (perfection of purpose) times 10 (fullness). The multiple of 7 times 70 points the fullness of the perfection of God’s purpose involving the full perfection of God’s purpose in forgiveness. It does not mean that one is only required to forgive his offender 490 times.  It is a symbolic number generated by multiplying symbolic numbers.  (See Symbolic Meaning of Numbers page).  Similarly, the 70 weeks of Daniels prophecy in Dan 9:24-27 can be seen to be the perfection of the fullness of God’s purpose for His people. This conclusion completely agrees with the stated purpose of the 70 weeks:

  • Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.  (Dan 9:24)
