Introduction

The English word ‘hell’ is based on the following Hebrew (Old Testament) and Greek (New Testament) words:

Hebrew:

  1. Sheol – ~65 occurrences – the grave, hell, pit

Greek:

  1. Hades – 11 occurrences – grave, hell
  2. Tartaroo – 1 occurrence – hell
  3. Geenna (or gehenna) – ~12 occurrences – hell (refers to eternal hellfire and is derived from the Hebrew ‘valley of Hinnon’

The Greek word geenna or Gehenna refers to final Judgment Day, while the Greek words hades and tartaroo (as well as the Hebrew word sheol) refers to where the unsaved dead abide after death, but prior to the second coming of Jesus Christ on Judgment day.  There are many other words and symbols used to describe the final judgment day, which are further discussed below.

In addition, there are other terms used to describe ‘hell’ prior to Judgment day:

Hebrew:

  1. ‘Pit’ (Hebrew words H953, bor and H7845, chachath)

Greek:

  1. ‘Bottomless pit’ (Greek words G12, abussos and G5421, phrear)

‘Hell Now’ cast into Eternal Hell

And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.  (Rev 20:11-15)
