Discerning of Spirits

One of the 9 spiritual gifts listed in 1 Cor 12 is ‘discerning of spirits’.  The Pentecostals / Charismatics believe that this gift (Greek: charisma) is a special (supernatural) ability given to certain Pentecostals / Charismatics.  This gift is similar to other charisma in 1 Cor 12:4-11 such as speaking in tongues, supernatural healings, words of wisdom and knowledge, direct prophecy given by God and miracles (power).  This ability to ‘discern spirits’ is to innately detect whether people are speaking by the Holy Spirit or by evil spirits.  It is true that in the Apostolic Church, this was a necessary gift to be able to differentiate between true and false prophecy.  However, upon completion of the New Testament by the Apostolic Church this gift ceased as well as the other supernatural gifts.  All these gifts were important witnesses of the Apostolic Church and served to spread the Gospel in the 1st Century A.D.  These gifts also have important symbolic, spiritual truths as well. Discernment of spirits today occurs by the indwelling Holy Spirit working through God’s people using the Bible in order to distinguish truth from error.  This is very important since demons reside within churches during the Last Days. Spiritual Gifts (charisma) Passages – New Testament

1 Cor 12

  • Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these works that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. (1Co 12:4-11)
  • And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way. (1Co 12:28-31)

Eph 4

  • And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ (Eph 4:11-15)

Ro 12

  • For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. (Rom 12:3-8)

1 Pet 4

  • As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. (1Pe 4:10-11)
