The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector is a strong warning to today’s church leaders. Although church leaders will not admit they are like Pharisees, this parable teaches otherwise. It is important to understand the spiritual meaning of this parable. The Pharisee’s prideful prayer reveals his zealous, hypocritical behavior. He believes the Bible is from God, but he teaches a works-based, legalistic false gospel. He is a hypocrite. The tax collector is a despised person in the church community.
