In Ezekiel 4:16-17, Ezekiel pronounces that the staff of bread is broken in Jerusalem. Historically, this event describes the famine in Jerusalem during the Babylonian siege of the city. The Babylonian siege is a type of the end-time Great Tribulation that occurs on the church. The staff of bread points to the strength of the Word of God as it rules in the church. Moreover, famine points to the lack of bread (lack of the Word of God in the church). As such, this results in the desolation of the church. Israel and Judah are symbolic of the church today.
Ezekiel was a prophet sent from God to Israel. The house of Israel is a type of the church today. Ezekiel prophesied to Israel during the Babylonian Captivity. Ezekiel received many visions while in captivity by the Babylonians. The Babylonian Captivity symbolizes the the Great Tribulation, which the church is on the verge of entering.
