In Ezekiel 4, God commanded Ezekiel to eat defiled bread for 390 days. This bread is defiled because is to be baked with human manure. The 390 days corresponds to the 390 days when Ezekiel lays on his side. This 390 day time period represents judgment on Israel. It is symbolic for 390 years, which has spiritual meaning. The defiled bread also has important spiritual truth. Also, Ezekiel was commended to drink 1/6 of a hin of water, which also has symbolic meaning. Israel and Judah are symbolic of the church today. Ezekiel was a prophet sent from God to Israel. The house of Israel is a type of the church today. Ezekiel prophesied to Israel during the Babylonian Captivity. Ezekiel received many visions while in captivity by the Babylonians. The Babylonian Captivity symbolizes the the Great Tribulation, which the church is on the verge of entering. The Great Tribulation is that ‘little season’ just before the Last Day when Jesus Christ returns. The action of laying down is symbolic of the spiritual deadness of the church of the Old Testament.
