Slain in the Spirit

‘Slain in the Spirit’ is believed by many Pentecostals and Charismatics. This action is when a church leader causes the Christian disciple to fall backwards.  It is usually in a healing service and often is accompanied by various people speaking in tongues.  Pentecostals and Charismatics claim that this is proof of falling under the power of the Holy Spirit.  According to Pentecostals, this is a miraculous sign (wonder) that is reserved for those select people who are baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of signs and wonders.  Miraculous signs and wonders ceased after the Apostolic Church formed the New Testament.  Although there are some passages (see study below) which are used to support this miracle, when these passages are examined more carefully, it can be seen that the Bible does not support being ‘slain in the spirit’.  On the contrary, the act of falling backwards in the Bible is always used in a negative connotation indicating damnation.  True Christians are made to awake and stand again, which are important symbols of salvation.  Using a falling backwards to indicate a power of the Holy Spirit on God’s people is foreign to the teaching of the Bible.   These activities in Pentecostal and Charismatic circles can be explained by the power of suggestion, ‘group think’, or other emotional displays (whether intended or not).

Excerpt from Wikipedia Describing ‘Slain in the Spirit’:

“Slain in the Spirit or slaying in the Spirit are terms used by Pentecostal and charismatic Christians to describe a form of prostration in which an individual falls to the floor while experiencing religious ecstasy. Believers attribute this behavior to the power of the Holy Spirit. Other terms used to describe the experience include falling under the power, overcome by the Spirit, and resting in the Spirit. The practice is associated with faith healing because individuals are often slain while seeking prayer for illness.”

Bases for Pentecostal Belief in being ‘slain in the Spirit’:

  • As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.  (Eze 1:28)
  • And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground. And, behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands. And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling. (Dan 10:7-11)
  • While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. (Mat 17:5-6)
  • And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. (Rev 1:17-18)
  • The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,  (Rev 4:10)

In addition, there are several passages in the Bible where the laying on of hands (usually associated with healing) results in the power of God being imparted to others.

Falling Backwards in the Bible

The phenomenon Pentecostal or Charismatic circles known as ‘slain in the spirit’ or ‘falling backwards’ is a false sign and wonder. The act of falling backwards is when a preacher or evangelist either touches or breathes on a person and the result is that they fall straight back into a stupor. It is often done in during healing services. There is absolutely no precedent in the Bible for the act of falling backwards. Each time we find people falling backwards, we find a portrait of damnation, not a spiritually edifying occurrence:

  • Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.  (Isa 1:4)
  • Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward. (Gen 49:17)
  • When mine enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence. (Psa 9:3)
  • But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. (Isa 28:13)
  • And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken. And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years. (1Sa 4:17-18)
  • But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. (Joh 18:6)

Additionally, the imagery of falling is also used as a symbol of judgment and damnation:

  • Greek: pipto – judgment – Lk 6:39, Rev 1:7, 2:5, 6:13-16, 11;13, 14:8, 18:2, Mat 21:44, Lk 10:18 (Satan fell), Lk 13:4, 20:18, 21:24, etc
  • Fell – judgment – 1 Tim 3:6, Gal 5:4, Mat 7:25-27, 15:14, Heb 10:31, 1 Cor 10:12, Lk 8:13, Mk 14:27, etc
  • Fallen – sign of damnation – e.g. Joel 2:8, Jer 6:15, 8:4, 46:6, 50:32, 25:27,34, etc
  • Spiritually, it’s the opposite of stand – Ro 14:4, Ps 20:8
  • A sign of damnation – Ro 11:11,22, 14:4, 1 Cor 10:12, Heb 3:17, 4:11, Mat 7:27, 21:44, Lk 10:18, 11:17, 20:18, 21:24

New Testament Verses on ‘Resurrection’

The word for resurrection is the Greek word (G386), anastasis, which is a noun that literally means ‘a standing up’.  The associated verb for this is usually translated as ‘rise’ or stand up (G450) and is the Greek word ‘anistemi’.  The related Greek word for ‘stand is ‘histemi’ (G2476).  All three words can refer to the resurrection of either Jesus Christ or of His people (Christians).
